Post Pep Talk
Quote:
Let's keep the pictures coming! Great photos and post thus far. In the meantime, I must say it was fun hanging out with the S. Cal guys and I am sure the feeling is mutual with the N. Cal people". Great times at camp and on the trail! We had Land Rovers, one Jeep, and even a 2wd Ford join us on this event - rightfully so the 2wd stayed behind @ camp. ... even with the diverse backgrounds of people in this run, diff professions and politics, whether you like baloot or not , or prefer Spanish wine over Wild Turkey or Dr Pepper (Dan's choice of drinks)... didn't matter. Regardless of what you drove, drank, or like to eat, we all got along well.... and even if it took all morning and part of the afternoon (about 9am to 2pm) to travel 3.4 miles of deep powder snow (we didn't even get to the actual Bald Mtn trail (Group 2 didn't) - Group 1 got about 1 mile on the actual trail)) and back another 3.4 miles of snow till paved road, it was a successful trip in our minds.Having said all that, we accomplished the following: - We turned around on time; thus none of the 3am or 5am struckfest like last year! - Nobody got carried away and thus nobody got hurt or vehicle broke down on the trail - Everybody followed the Golden Rules e.g. no drinking alcohol on the trail. We certainly saved the drinking ill we got back to camp Saturday. You can ask Brenton (he was one with the bottle of Wild Turkey) or you can ask Max (who fell asleep with his night headlamp still on his head) after drinking Scotch, Sea Monster beer, you name it.... ![]() - Overall fun! But I do agree; good point David - bigger tires, and airing down. Chains can only help. Most important tip is follow existing snow tracks established already guarantee you're not going to get stuck in the morning snow condition Saturday we were in. Soft deep powder (fresh from the day before snow fall); plus it was cold and the snow just crumbled when you pick up a handful. Once you get out of the track and into deep prestine snow that early morning, it's guaranteed stuck. When we started our turn-around about 2pm, the snow trail conditions changed; the sun heated the snow tracks, making it a lil harder/packed and easier to blaze thru; we made the 3.4 snow trek back to the paved road much fast vs the morning snow conditions. And if stayed longer, night fall hits and temp drops, the snow would have ben different again: soft, powdery from the cold... stuckfest city! Glad we started our turn around at 2pm. Funny Saturday morning, I gave this driver's meeting speech before Group 1 and Group 2 took off around 7am and 8am respectively (we have two groups this go around/this year). I pointed out lesson learned from last year's Shaver Lake Snow Run especifically the part about "Stay on the existing snow tracks". ...What did I do the first 5 mins of the run, drove right into snow mush and the first one to be stuck in our group 2. ![]() As Max or Elliot would call it 'Fail". Lol! ![]() ![]() For the record, I really wanted to show people what not to do; it was a visual aid! After that visual, I was cruising along on the CT110, and didn't get stuck anymore except when Dan got stuck driving my truck ; I even managed to pull some folks out, or give the Husky winch a work out.But seriously folks - if nobody got stuck, we wouldn't have stories to tell and fun times/experience doing recovery on the snow. Can't leave w/o poking fun of our situations. With that said, let's start some awards - please chime-in your votes or create new awards and who'd you nominate. - Most Stuck Award - Honorary Most Stuck Award - Worst Stuck Award - Honorary Worst Stuck Award - Award for Technically Not Stuck but got stuck helping others get unstruck ![]() - Award for getting stuck on someone's truck (Dan't get that one) - Award for winching/towing the most people get unstruck (Conal gets that one) - Award for not getting stuck period! - Award for being avail to help others dig, winch in most stuck situation (Mike or Monty gets that one - he was everywhere) - Award for wanting to be struck (I think Lutz or Brenton gets this - understand they drove into deep snow so they can be struck during our lunch break) - Best snow fire pit? (Eric's GF Jen gets that one) - Who ate the most tri tip steak? ![]() - Award for No Worries (I believe Dugal gets that one)! - Award for drinking the most Wild Turkey Post your nomination/vote or new awards!

![]() I think everyone saw that squirrel except for Steve! Like Tom Collins said in the fall acticle of 2007 Overland Journal "Today is a Good Day to Die" scouting for the "1994 Camel Trophy event" in 1993 in Argentina/Chile. The squirrel said the same. I saw it infront my way on Hwy 145, and I said, you ain't dying on my Camel Trophy 110 truck/no splatter on my sandglow paint. I missed him, as welll as Eric who was behind me and so forth. Unfortunately, the squirrel's luck ended with Steve!

Yes, I vote for Brenton!
![]() Don't remember if at this photo Brenton already started drinking Wild Turkey, Jack, Scotch... Lighter fluid j/k - he was happy as a clam sitting in our man made ice soft/bench. Plus it was his birthday week. Desered to enjoy his beverages. We wished him belated!

Keep the awards coming!
Also let's put some details on some of these great photos submited so far. ![]() Here's one I remember Day 1 (Friday) getting settled, it just snowed, and we are desperately wanting to get a camp fire started. We tried hard to get the wet wood/fire started using "Man vs Wild" rub sticks technique Eric was doing. It wasn't working! I think at one point, we said, "forget this", "it's cold", "let;'s burn the forest down" (j/k if you are smokey the bear - we wouldn't go that). Stages of how to light a camp fire "our way" Step 1: Prep w/gasoline; lots of it! Noticed the seriousness on Conal's face and take note of the technique applied; wasn't in the LR manual - all instinct! ![]() Step 2: Step back, keep women and children out, and if you're vehicle was nearby - sorry, and then light it! Boom! Step 3: Camp fire settled back to normal size an hour later (smile). You can see the day (literally) and night difference in brightness
