Joshua tree/Coachella
Planning a trip to Joshua Tree national park after camping Coachella. Not very familiar with southern california but want to spend some time getting lost in the rover. Does anyone know of any good off grid camping locations or good trails?

Did you figure out where to go? If not, I have some info on the topic.

I used to spend a good deal of time in JT, and for the most part, all camping is off the "grid"... depending when you go, you may have the camp all to yourself. There are numerous trails in and around JT... you can get started with the NPS site http://www.nps.gov/jotr/planyourvisi...ntry-roads.htm and go from there.
Also, there are numerous camps and trails with historical significance from WWII and the Desert Training Center under George Patton. Maps are hard to come by... but if you have the time, stop at the Patton Museum in Desert Center (http://www.generalpattonmuseum.com/) to check out the old training camps. Here is a map (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...nter_-_map.png) of the camps... access to these is changing yearly. AAA might have some maps of the area, and of course, be advised that cell and GPS may be non-existent or spotty, so tread lightly and carefully. Have fun! Marc |
