Yeah, its a VW vanagon, even come in Westfalia Campers, with a Synchro gear box, meaning 4x4....

I have seen videos and actual ones at Hollister doing some gnarly stuff....they can be made a bit taller, but basically a 4 banger with a rooftop tent, kitchen and self contained..

It was almost the Rover before we got the rover, as it holds 2 adults/2kids easily...

Wait till Eric (NorCal) gets into this thread, that man is a VW man to the end....
It's about people and the Land Rovers that own them.

Yeah me too this is my 11th Volkswagen, It's a good habit too!

It's pretty capable, but you NEED aggressive tires & at least a rear locker (which about 60% sold here in America had) to crawl. I'm going to have the front diff machined for a locker or maybe a limited slip.
I am also going to remove the viscous coupler and add the disconnect with a solid shaft. Here in SoCal, there isn't much need for the full time 4WD.
They came factory with a snorkel, a dirt/water centrifuge, and skid plates amongst other things.

    someday I'll do my 1.9 TDI conversion...aaahhhhhhh

Phony rigged film, That was a specially weakened one... it was also rusted out very badly... actually Vanagons were one of the safest vehicles made in it's day. The gauge of steel used in the stiffening members & front bumper was amazing.

    from a trusted source..
"This video was of a test of the capabilities of a newly installed crash test facility, NOT a test of the VW T3 Doka they smashed--- note the absence of dummies and checkerboard timing marks. That orange Doka was a junker, a very badly rusted 20 year old vehicle formerly owned by the German highway department. They smashed it at 100km/h head-on into a concrete wall with 1000kg loaded in the bed to show off how powerful their new catapult system was."

Here is a link you'll enjoy.

(And these are for 2WD only! The 4WD, (SYNCRO), is even better for various reasons, (passive plus active safety).

too bad the prices for a good syncro in the used market put the asking prices for some defenders to shame.. There are few oddities like the syncro tristar that make it in from time to time but they were never imported here directly due to the chicken tax.. FWIW my friends dad's 2wd westy got totaled a few months ago and he ended up getting 20K for a non syncro bus. I have another friend who's dad lives in colorado that picked up his syncro westy for 25K a few years ago and that was a steal..
