    Ham radio install

This weekend I am looking to tackle the installation of a Yaseau ft 7800 in an LR3. My question is where is be best place to thread the wire through the firewall.

Thinking about placing the unit in one of the glove boxes and then run the remote kit to the dash.

Which leads me to the antenna , for now, I have a magnet unit that I can put on and off of the roof. Gary...Dave...what type of antenna do you have and how did you run the wires??? any drilling involved?

    Mark,

You got the right guys, both dave & gary have done it. I believe that on the left side of the bulkhead is a loom with a rubber grommet that has extra nipples, make an incission and run your wires thru there.
    good luck!

    Mark,

I mounted mine in the glove box and used the remote kit to place head unit on the dash.

I ran through on the drivers side. Take out the cover with the courtesy light and you can get up in there.

Radio in glove box is fine, mine is located behind the side rear access panel.

Get a SUV rear hatch mount from HRO. Diamond K400 I believe is the model. Get one with enough cable to reach the radio where ever you mount that.

Select a dual band antenna that fits you needs. They come in all sorts of lengths and styles.

Do a search, I believe David posted some model numbers of antennas.

I mounted my radio under the driver's seat, with the faceplate on the dash. As Gary said there is an empty pass through gromet in the driver's side footwell. That is where I ran all the power from my second battery into the truck.

It's a tricky task and requires that you make a few holes here and there, but in the end the result will be a car that has a useful ham radio installation kits in it. So good luck, be careful not to cut any wires, and enjoy!

    My 8900 in m DII

Screwed a cheapy cellphone/GPS mount to the face of the passenger side ashtray. power lead enters through sealed gromment in firewall. radio mounted under pass rear seat using a homemade bracket-moves with seat, but strikes CD player when put too far forward.
