I am giving in.................i finally decided to buy one. ~!

I have been kicking this around for years.

I have finally decided to find myself an iconic Land Rover Series LWB / 109. I am afraid that I keep putting it off, and by the time I decide, I am going to be too damned old, and those things are going to break my knees/ back/ biceps/ wallet/ marriage in that order.

Surprisingly, spouse does not mind, and as long as I do not make her ride in it too much, she's even cool with an occasional drive around.

I HAVE to have a wagon version. I grew up with them ( my pops had a 66' 109; I remember being 3 and having my picture taken with me inside the hood-mounted spare). But,

I also remember my Dad using every kind of ( expletitive) every time that thing decided it had ran enough for one day....two broken rearends, endless flats, overheats, a wooden rear bench seat ( I thought that was actually cool), and an air-conditioned bottom end once.

Obviously as in any car, there are better and worse models and years.

But I am not looking for a new comfy one ( I will save that for my future Defender 110 fund). I can live with goofy brakes and no Ac or PS. What about improves?

Isn't there a BETTER engine or internals after 66'. Something about 3-main bottom end versus 5-main, disc brakes, Salisbury rear and such.

OF COURSE, rust would be a concern, but frankly, I don't even care about that as much.

    Opinions would be most welcome.

I saw a 66' 109 on FleaBay that was really nice. The guy was in the fence at $10K, and it was really nice and as ugly funky it was so cool.

I am NOT looking for a traveler, commuter or anything else other than a fun around-town 109.

5 bearing Engine is better and anything else you can get that is slightly newer or upgraded (disk brakes or PS).
But most I've seen around here have neither of those.

    Good luck,
I gave up, too expensive to get me one here, I am happy with mine overseas for now...

When do they start with the 5-bearing engines ? I can live with/ without PS and discs. I do want something fairly sturdy/ "reliable" if that is humanly possible in an old LR..

I think the 5-main bearing engine started around 1980. They're not easy to find. Neither are 109s, for that matter. I have a friend up here who's got his for sale for $10K, nice running and driving truck, needs paint. It's a 3-door (which I like better anyway.) Only reason he's selling it is that his wife had a serious car accident and he needs the money for medical bills.

I missed out on a very straight unrestored original 67' with Safari roof and two sets of tires for $7K.

Seen your friend's on CL. Unfortunately, I am looking for only a 5 dr wagon. Thanks anyway.
