How to verify an early vin number....is it possible?

    Hello,

I am looking at a 1984' for sale. The VIN is:
    SALLDHMV1AA210835

Is there a way to tell if this thing does not have some sort of sordid past...........?

First of all, that wouldn't be a Series truck, and especially not an early one. That would be an early coiler, basically a Defender but well before the Defender name came into use, so those early trucks were simply designated Land Rover 90 or Land Rover 110 (or 130, etc.)

Here's the breakdown on your VIN:

    SAL Manufacturer code: Land Rover
LD Model: Defender (for early models: Ninety, or One Ten)
    H Wheel base: 110 inch
M Body type: 4-door station wagon (LWB)
V Engine type: 3.5 litre V8 petrol, carburettor
1 Steering and transmission: Right-hand drive (RHD), 4-speed manual (LT95, or other)
    A Model year: 1983, 1984
    A Assembly location: Solihull, UK
    210835 Serial number

There may be a couple of sites that will give you some info on the past history of the truck, but I don't have any links. I did come across one such site several years ago when searching the VIN on my '95 NAS D90 chassis which had a breakdown of all NAS Defenders and gave specific info on certain trucks where the history was known, but I don't think it would cover the truck you're looking at as it's a grey-market truck. However, do a google search of that VIN and see what pops up. I just tried it and right off the bat it came up with an auction site listing that truck as damaged but when you open the link, all it tells you is that truck has been sold.

I've also moved this thread to the Defender forum since the truck in question is essentially a Defender, just not with the Defender name.

Not sure with a car that age. Best to get it inspected - that should be able to see if any repaired damage is there.

not sure if carfax will pickup on the recent history - it had a full write up of my 94 classic - insurance claims should pop in there.

Searched and found it - If it's been in England for 20 years I would expect plenty of rust/corrosion, and associated repairs (good and bad!) not just on the chassis, but also on things like the electrical components, bolts, etc.

Cars of that age were made to a very variable build standard when new, and corrosion prevention was not high on the agenda.

Thanks Dan. Lots of good info.
I wasn't quite sure where this one fell. I had an 83' which was a 109. appreciate the help.

To follow up on what Timbo said,
Yes, this Rover has spent a considerable amount in the UK. Howver, it is a LHD. Weird.

The seller had it listed on Ebay for some time and no bites. He states that he is a licensed dealer in NC. He also states that he is regularly importing and selling these; however, his Fb is only 135 and only two car transactions/ sales, none Rover related , and one bad.
And with a name of "FatRickid", not exactly a confidence builder......

Anyone heard of the stories of the infamous William/ Bill/ Will Maniscalco ........? I don't want to find myself of something similar.

Exchanged minimal EMs to try to get a feel for the seller. Very vague. Yet the price seemed not too far outr from where I would be comfortable with.

I paid $7K for my 83' and it cleaned up well for a driver. I don't see these pushing above 15K unrestored. Maybe I'm wrong ...?

I suppose you could put it in a nutshell by saying if it has leaf springs it's a Series, if it has coils it's a Defender (or Pre-Defender.)

You could always try a UK vin lookup service to see if it's had any reported issues.

i found this one on the web

I gave up looking for an unrestored 110 for now.

The original seller was too "sheisty". Very evasive when I asked specific questions, other than " everything is good!". WTF does that mean...........?!

Couple of others seemed very vague on their descriptions, and when I asked to fly out and see them, all of a sudden " oh sorry, I just sold it". Right.

And another one, "freshly painted".......right over the rust spots still visible through the new paint. Bunch of retards.
