The Beast gets a transplant...... 300Tdi

Just a start to my build thread. Picked up the 300tdi and R380 trans from Aaron yesterday. Came with EVERYTHING. Just a few pics of it in the garage. Will be stripping it and and going through the steps in the coming week, then most of the build will be after Feb 20th. (Taking vacation. Haha). I'll try and document as much as I can for those thinking of doing this.

So, since I have this engine hanging there. I needed to take off another engine from the stand. So instead of sitting it on the ground like the dirty one pictured. I fabbed up a roller dealy thingy this morning. Here's the pics of that. I made 2 because the Rangie still has her 4.6. That will be sold but needed something to move it around on. Plus, this makes for a shipping brace too.

Afternoon spent tearing stuff off the engine. All bagged and tagged, ready for cleaning.

Always amazed at what I find getting used engines. This garden variety "Lowes" bolt was holding the Alt on. It was pushed into the bracket to make a nice square indentation.

    Cool!
You'll love this engine, not powerful, but fun enough, nice torque and 25MPG.

Check the usual now that is all easy to get to, if you haven't already: timing belt, brake vacuum (leaks), Cyclone crankcase (leaks, clean it up good), get rid of EGR if still there, If you see any coolant around the 'P' gasket change it!, ...

    Good luck!

Yeah, already removed the egr. Just need to get a pipe without the t-fitting. All gaskets are getting changed and all hoses. Doing the timing belt upgrade. Etc..... Just waiting on parts now.

Finally tearing into it. Have some vacation time this week from returning back to the states. Should get lots done this week.

Just a pic of the new rear end. I like it. Much cleaner.

Front Bumper coming off. This is not an engine hoist fellas, its that helper replacement of the guy that never shows up.

Alright, now we are ready to properly remove the engine. Grind away the paint to reveal the welds for the upper cross piece thingy (don't know the correct term here.) Then drill them out.

Remove and it will look like this. You can weld them all up again, OR, use rivets so next time is simple easy.

Now there is TONS of room to work in and do whatever you need to, to get that engine out. This helps tremendously if you have a lifted truck.

Especially when on tippy toes, I can barely reach over the fender. I'm 5'7 so not too short.

The engine successfully made it out. Along with the tranny and trans case. Engine is getting packed up and sent to Cali today to its new owner.

And a scene from Hoarder's.... Oh wait, thats my wife's parking spot in the garage. Good thing I have a loving wife. Anybody need an engine. I have a couple leftover.

A question came up on another thread here but I figured I would cover it so it's a one stop shop. The question was in reference to how does the LT230 shifter mount from a ZF tranny currently in the car, to the R380 manual box. Just passing along info for future transplanters.

Below is the LT230 shifter on the ZF mount.

Here is the LT230 shifter on the R380. All you have to do, is unbolt the shifter box from the ZF mounting plate, and bolt it to the R380 mounting plate, hook up the linkages and thats it. Make sure to get the manual linkages and the R380 frame mount. They are different than the auto tranny.

Finally got the mounts all welded in. Kinda going slow. Just seems like everytime I want to get out to the garage, something else comes up. Plus been waiting on parts for a while. Still waiting on some parts.

I mocked up the engine and just installed the trans and engine to get the proper position. There is a kit around for like $100. I didn't want to spend the money and just spent a couple more hours with the hoist.
