    axel and driveshafts

ok so i keep hearing every one talking about HD axels and replaceing your drive shafts. i have a 2002 d2 and wanting to do a 3-4" and 31-33" tires. But are the discovery 2 axels and drive shafts realy that weak i mean should i be wored if i wanted to go stomping through a mud hole or see how far i can clear over some rocks...id think it wouldent be a problem to run the set up i want or is it just a side of caution to up grade???

First, you have to replace or rebuild your front drive shaft to prevent it from failing, usually taking the tranny with it. Second as an 02, you do not have a CDL, locking t/case so you must either depend on the the ETC or if more traction is required, add a CDL assembly and linkage to your t/case.
As far as axles go, with out lockers, your 24 spline axles are OK for where you live, if though you were really wanting extra traction 1 or 2 lockers and possibly H.D. axles would be of a benefit.
I would suggest you stay at a 32" or smaller tire, like a 265/75/16 or 245/75/16, any bigger and you will need to replace both front and rear diffs to get at least 4 spider gears for the extra torque of a big tire.
    Confused yet?

Interesting discussion, I hope I don't repeat questions already answered.

I run 33" (32.8) tires and have an active CDL and will have a Tom Woods front driveshaft soon.

Is it possible to add a TT locker with 4:10 gears and HD axels to the rear only? Or is it best to do front and back together as the gear ratio has changed in the rear?

Do the CV's need to be updated from stock on a locker/hd axel setup?

Are all lockers run / activated by an air compressor or do some run full time?

If full time, does this impact the driving (slower speeds and less gas mileage)?

Would it be stupid (If I have to ask....) to add a TT locker on the rear without adding HD axels or changing the gearing? Seems like a recipe for broken stuff on the trail. (rock and ledge climbing if locker(s)/axels are added).

To run lockers, you need a CDL, so if your truck doesn't have one you will need to add the CDL assembly along with a shifter, before trying to install lockers.
