    SAE 2011 September 16-18

The 2011 Southern Appalachian Expedition will be held at Crawford's Campground near Murphy, NC September 16-18, 2011. Crawford's at Tellico

Crawford's is only seventeen miles further from Beasley Knob than last year's event location. They are 4WD focused and we are happy to host the event at their facility.

Hosted each year by SoLaRoS, SAE auctions and raffles have raised over $60,000 for charity. Last year our biggest donation yet was made to the Habitat for Humanity of Towns/Union County. The final total raised was $10,000.

The website for the event will be up and running shortly. Watch this thread for updates.

We hope to see you there!

We have just confirmed that Shirley Deane - author of "An Unreasonable Woman" will be in attendance at the Solaros SAE event on September 16-18. Shirley attended the Southeast Overland Rally near Asheville in June where she gave a lecture describing her adventures and travels in a Land Rover during the 1960's.

Shirley will be giving her talk at 7:00PM Friday evening September 16th at the campground pavilion at Crawford's Campground , 87 Horton Rd, Murphy, NC. She will also have copies of her book available for purchase and signing.

We look forward very much to welcoming Shirley to joining us for our annual SAE event.

Shirley Deane was born in New York City and was given her first accordion at the age of eight. At 27, she left the United States to work her way around the world playing her own brand of jazz and classical music. She visited 67 countries, living in Pakistan for six months, Nepal for a year, India for eight years, and South Africa for 14 years. She studied music, psychology and philosophy, attending NYU and the University of Hawaii, and for a brief period studied medicine at the University of Munich. She was the first woman to drive a Land Rover from London to Kathmandu, and later managed a clinic at a Tibetan refugee camp in Nepal for the Swiss Red Cross, where she also raised funds and taught English. In 1967, she became public relations officer and fundraiser for Inanda Seminary near Durban, South Africa. She is the author of two previous books, Black South Africans, a Who’s Who (Oxford University Press, Capetown, 1978), which she published under Dee Shirley Deane, and Wisdom, Bliss, & Common Sense: Secrets of Self-Transformation (Quest Books, 1989), which she published under her Indian name, Darshani Deane. Ms. Deane returned to the United States in 1998 and settled in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she now writes.

    Stu,

Is there a registration page somewhere or is this just a show-up and pay event?
